Cost of living crisis or cost of giving crisis?

A Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) survey in May 2022 found that almost 90% of charities are concerned about the cost of living rising, with almost 60% of charities “concerned about people having less money to donate to their causes”. In July 2022, UK Fundraising reported that 55% of the public stated that their current financial situation makes it harder to donate.

However, UK Fundraising reported that there is good news! Despite the economic pressures, 74% of the public have donated in the past three months. This is the second highest figure since the start of the pandemic. In Charity Digitals article on Cost of Living, they reported 80% of under 40s have given since the rise in the cost of living, with Gen Z the most generous at 82%. Encouragingly, the public’s intention to donate in the coming months remains high with 73% saying they will do so. Additionally, online donations are at their highest level since this research began in 2020 – 45% of people have given this way in the last quarter.

Some questions to think about:

  1. What digital fundraising ways do you have to offer to your supporters?
  2. Are you seeing an increase in donations?
  3. Do you have a digital fundraising strategy for 2023?
