Status of UK Fundraising 2022

A pandemic, lockdown and restrictions, rising prices and financial uncertainty in a cost of living crisis have meant that charities have had to become more adaptable in order to continue to maintain UK fundraising.

According to the 2022 edition Status of Fundraising Report, charities have reported that their income has declined for the third year in a row. Some of the reasons cited include of course the pandemic, inadequate resources to grow income, existing supporters giving less and the organisation not having enough people with the right skills.

However, despite the concern over declining income, more than half of charities reported that they had either exceeded their fundraising targets or met them. Fewer than a quarter (23%) said they failed to reach their target.

This achievement demonstrates that, while there are challenges to respond to, charities have generally been good at accommodating these. Income may have declined, but most organisations are still meeting or exceeding goals when they plan for this eventuality.

Supported Giving has seen similar results to Blackbaud whereby a high percentage of charity customers are seeing an increase in donations rather than a decrease.

So what are these charities doing to see these results? More than half the charities questioned said they are investing in technology with 32% reporting an income increase. 67% now say they understand how technology can help, however, only 35% believe they are getting the most out of it.

The report notes that charities that are fully utilising technology are more collaborative, more likely to be digitally mature, are committed to ESG, and are gaining more supporters than they are losing.
