Improve Your Gift Aid Recovery

Imagine what a charity could do with a share of the c. £600 million that is left unclaimed by charities each year. If it was just 1% for a charity that equates to £6m alone. That’s an awful lot of aid that could go into the hands and mouths of people who really need it.
Like many charities, we at Supported Giving wanted to explore the reasons why £600m goes unclaimed by charities each year and to highlight some of the issues behind this. Why is it that still around 30% of donors have a fairly poor understanding of what Gift Aid means, according to the HMRC.
On the flip side, some charities have become increasingly concerned about going back to past donors to ask them to register for Gift Aid on a past donation, with some confusion still out there about what is permissible or not when using a donor’s data, under GDPR, to re-contact them.
So, we set out to canvas opinion – talking to charities; to legal experts, data privacy specialists and people involved in helping charities achieve significant payments for Gift Aid, previously left unclaimed.
We believe that Gift Aid Recovery can be tackled by charities, if the donor re-engagement communications and permission to ‘Gift Aid it’ are staged in a clear, understandable and compliant way. Many charities find it challenging to have the experienced team in place to do this, with an easy way to track and record the outreach programme with donor data.
We hope you find the report of interest and naturally, if you are a charity reading this, the Supported Giving team would really welcome the opportunity to work with you.
